Fishing for bodies
Mr. Wei lives in Gansu province, on the banks of the Yellow River. When his pear orchards were confiscated by the local authorities to make way for a housing construction site, he had to look for another job. He now fishes for corpses near a power dam, which he sells to grieving families. Usually, the deceased would commit suicide by jumping off a picturesque bridge in the bustling city of Lanzhou, upstream. It takes seven days for a corpse to arrive on Mr. Wei’s fishing territory.
